Imagine being a 14 year old lacrosse goalie and not being able to bend your knee...
It truly is hard to imagine, but that is exactly what happened to a client of ours. She landed on her knee playing basketball and her knee just "blew up" with fluid. With 2 weeks before the lacrosse season was slated to start, she could not bend her knee or run, 2 skills essential in the world of sports. Not to mention, the mental component of being a goalie and worrying that your are going to get hit with a shot right to the knee. (This actually did happen, but more on that later.)
She underwent 2 sessions of shockwave therapy a week apart as well as following a rigorous home program to remind the quadricep muscle how to engage despite the swelling. Her Mom was also instructions on how to use Kinesiology tape to mitigate swelling at home.
She was able to attend tryouts and successfully participate without fear of injury. She made the team and continues to be the starting goalie. She did manage to get hit with a shot to the knee, but with no ill effects. She ended up needing a third session of shockwave therapy, 2 weeks later as she still had some knee stiffness. But all-in-all, a pretty amazing recovery.
From chronic conditions to acute injuries, Shockwave Therapy helps us treat patients with no down time.
